Abbott’s Prodigy MRI™ is a spinal cord stimulation (SCS) system designed to treat chronic and intractable pain in the trunk and limbs. This implantable device uses a rechargeable pulse generator that offers two stimulation modes: traditional tonic and innovative BurstDR™, a patented technology that emulates the brain’s natural neuronal firing patterns. This combination modulates both the sensory and emotional pathways of pain, providing relief not only to the physical sensation but also to the associated suffering.

A key feature of the Prodigy MRI™ is its compatibility with 1.5 Tesla magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the head and extremities. This is especially beneficial for patients who require MRI evaluations without compromising the functionality of the device. In addition, its compact, rechargeable design offers a long battery life, reducing the need for surgical interventions for replacements and improving the patient experience.

The Prodigy MRI™ system has proven effective in managing various chronic pain conditions, including failed back surgery syndrome, intractable lower back and leg pain, and diabetic peripheral neuropathy in the lower extremities. Clinical studies have reported an average pain relief of 53%, maintained for more than five years at clinically significant levels (≥ 50% pain relief). This sustained efficacy, along with its upgradeability without surgery, positions the Prodigy MRI™ as an advanced and adaptable option for the treatment of chronic pain.
